Lightning streaked across the sky, and less than a heartbeat later, a deafening clap of thunder pierced the silence. Alec stepped into the house behind Gianna just as the sky opened. Although they’d spent about the last ten hours together, he’d wasn’t in a rush for the day to end. Much like yesterday, today had been one of the most laid-back days he’d spent with a woman in a long time.

Correction. It’d been the most relaxing and laid-back day he’d ever spent with a woman who wasn’t related to him. Gianna had been more than happy riding her bike around the island and later playing chess in her backyard. He loved knowing she wanted to spend time with him rather than just be seen with him, which was the case with most of the women he’d dated in the past. And whereas Gianna seemed to want nothing other than his company, other women he’d spent time with expected to see Broadway shows or to visit the most exclusive nightclubs in Boston or New York. If he asked them, none of those women would’ve suggested lunch from a takeout deli and then dessert at a popular ice-cream shop like Gianna had today. Instead, they wanted meals at the best restaurants.

The dark clouds made it seem much later than eight thirty. Despite the dim lighting in the kitchen, Gianna didn’t switch on a light. Instead, she hung her keys on the hook and plugged in her cell phone. “Looks like we got back just in time.”

Although often harmless, some people, his sister and sister-in-law included, became uneasy during storms like this one. Even when lightning and thunder weren’t involved, some, like his stepmom, disliked driving in the rain.

“My sister isn’t a big fan of storms.” While she tolerated them much better now, growing up, he remembered Allison hiding in her bedroom closet whenever a severe storm occurred. Allison, however, wouldn’t appreciate it if he shared that tidbit of information with anyone outside the family. “She prefers to be inside and not driving when they happen.”

“A lot of people feel that way. But I’m glad we’re back so I can enjoy it.” She turned back toward the window as a blinding bolt zigzagged across the sky, filling the room with light, and a second later, an explosion of thunder shook the house.

When Alec saw the first flash of light, he’d had a similar thought. “Really?”

“You don’t have to tell me it’s odd. I already know that, but I’ve always loved storms like this. There is just something about them.”

“I wasn’t going to.” Moving closer, Alec put his arms around her waist and lowered his face toward hers. “You just surprised me. I don’t know anyone other than my cousin and me who enjoys this kind of weather.”

They hadn’t kissed since leaving the house earlier—a situation that needed to be remedied. If the way she stared at his lips was any indication, Gianna shared his view.

Closing what space remained between them, Alec pressed his mouth against hers.
